Learning for Life

Quality Education Support Programme (QESP), subtitled “Learning for Life”, started during October
as the project began its technical assistance on teaching training and curriculum development
in Tajikistan. Professors Tinde Cerovics and Freidrich Buchberger guided local experts
through the establishment of working groups to develop teachers’ competencies whilst Dr Sergij
Gabrs c ek and Dr Richard Webber led additional project components on assessment and curriculum.
QESP is a technical support initiative sponsored by the European Union that is working closely
with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan. In November, the QESP
Team Leader Dr Michael Lightfoot, and other team members visited Kurgan-tube, Sughd and the
GBAO regions to establish cooperative relationship with Education Departments and Institutes of
Teachers Training. The QESP team discussed the opportunities and challenges for introducing
new science curricula into schools that emphasize learning by doing and applying knowledge to
real life situations.

As the project is currently in its stage of development, the immediate priority was to conduct baseline assessments to evaluate the attitudes to learning and the understanding of competence-based education amongst the various stakeholders consisting of students and teachers. The baseline study required stakeholders to complete
self-evaluating questionnaires related to learning competencies as well as taking part in focus group discussions.

Two reference schools in each region have been selected for focus group discussions. The informal
focus group discussions gave opportunities for these key stakeholders to analyze and share their
educational ambitions and concerns.
The project implementation continues till August 2020 and its main results are to provide an improved
system for teachers’ professional development, a revised national assessment strategy for
education, improved budgeting and monitoring of schools, and a reformed curriculum in key scientific
subject areas. Thus the pre evaluation results is crucial to the obtained results of the programme.
